Adventures in FlyingAugust 31, 2010

When I was 10 years old, my parents took me and my sisters to see “Cirque du Soleil”. The whole evening was jam-packed with amazing visuals, from the elaborate clown costumes to the juggler’s glittery makeup. But the one most memorable scene for me was when the trapeze artists performed their beautiful sequence.

There were both women and men on multiple swings. Their moves were so precise and graceful, and their poise relentless. They seemed to float through the air so calmly, as if wings would unfold at any moment from their bodies and carry them out of the building. I will never forget the phenomenal balance of strength, agility, and timing I witnessed that evening.

I believe that whenever we are truly touched by an experience, it’s because somehow a part of ourselves lives in it. The kid in me has wanted so badly to know what it feels like to fly through the air like that. So when I discovered a flier for Trapeze Club in New Paltz, New York, there was no doubt in my mind I had to do it. My wonderful friend Jessica was happy to accompany me on this adventure of a lifetime!

Whew! We finally made it.

Nice cozy lawn chairs while waiting for my turn. We got to fly about 5 times and I was late for each one. Coincidence?

The ladder goes up...

And up...

OK, why was this such a good idea? Can I renig on the whole childhood dream thing?

I really can't believe I'm doing this

Wow. What a beautiful feeling.

Woo Hoo!

This is awesome. I could get used to this.

Here were the great women coaching me and keeping me safe when it was my turn up there. They were super strong, precise with their communication, and amazingly trustworthy.

This trapeze experience was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done. Honestly it was more of a rush for me than skydiving, mainly because even though there were safety harnesses and nets accompanying the trapeze, your body instinctively relies on its own strength to work through the fun but physically challenging moves. The whole team at Trapeze Club was very adept and confident in their safety practices and guidelines. It was totally worth the 3 1/2 hour drive for a beautiful adventure that will last a lifetime: http://trapezeclub.org

Do you have any thrilling physical challenges you’d love to accomplish in this lifetime?
