Simply NourishingSeptember 28, 2010

Halfway through my 30 day challenge I naturally eat simpler foods. Except for a few Poppycock binges, my body has asked only for whole fruits, vegetables, and beans to nourish it.

I first noticed my body’s instinctual food voice when I was in my early teens. I had discovered distance running and fell in love. I quickly started to realize that whenever I drank soda earlier in the day, my after school cross country practice would end with stomach cramps and a miserable recovery period. I learned to like water pretty easily after a few of those experiences, and stayed away from soda indefinitely.

Many years later that same philosophy applies to my yoga practice. Because you are trapped practicing in a hot room for over an hour doing many static inversion postures, the last thing your stomach needs is a heavy meal. This is one of my favorite hydrating and nourishing salads to eat a few hours before my workout of choice.

The heirloom tomato stand is thinning fast. This is probably the last of the fresh tomatoes for me to enjoy until next year. Slice it up however you wish.

Slice a nice soft avocado in half, cutting around the pit

Stab the blade of your knife into the pit while it's still embedded in the avocado, twist the pit, and pull it out of the avocado.

Scoop the meat out with a spoon and they'll pop out in ready-made slices. Toss with your tomatoes in a bowl. Toss in a splash of balsamic vinegar

And my favorite ingredient, olive oil. Just a splash or 2 should be fine

The icing on the cake. Warm up a handful of pine nuts in a skillet to make this a warm, nutty, pre winter treat. Toss a bit of salt on them if you really want to live on the edge.

QUESTION:
Does your body crave certain foods depending on your levels of activity or inactivity?

I totally feel you with yoga – I have to be very thoughtful about what I eat for at least several hours before a class. I actually prefer yoga in the morning because I’ll have only a little snack, enough to kick-start my engine, and won’t have a full day’s worth of food digesting. It makes a considerable difference!
This salad looks so simple and delicious!

Galareh I need to try it with lemon juice – sounds like a great touch! And Lauren I love yoga in the morning for the exact same reason. It’s tough to practice in the evening because I have to eat so light all day or risk suffering;)

I know I crave carbs when I’m more active. Other than the my cravings generally fluctuate. If I have a weekend of too many sweets I crave fruits and veggies and light meals shortly after.

I feel the same way about sweets Tina! I love them but my body starts to crave a balance pretty fast. I usually want lots of greens and/or steamed or roasted veggies for a few days after too much dessert.

Oh that looks divine. I’m finding yoga to be tricky in regards to the food department. I like to workout in the morning, but I like to do cardio first and take a drink of water while running. But, I felt all crampy! Any advice? Do I have to do yoga first???? This would totally cramp my style.

That’s a tough one! I think it may be a good idea to try hydrating a LOT the night before your morning workout. Drink at least a liter of water between bedtime and starting your morning cardio session. That will help from you needing to drink too much during your run. Then try a bit of yoga after.

my body definitely knows when it’s had too much sugar.i always crave veggies on sudays and mondays (haha…detox from friday and saturday.) when i’m inactive, my hunger plummits and i just don’t feel like eating, period.

(btw, did you study photography or why do you take such damn good pictures?)

Wow, that’s awesome that you are in tune with your body. Not many people can say that about themselves.
After I run, I usually crave something light and refreshing, too.

I totally get what you are saying! This past summer when I was training in the heat, outside, in the sand for 3-4 hours a day not only was my body craving water, but coconut water and citrus :-)

Thanks so much for the compliments Sophia and Angela! Angela this is kind of a funny fact, but I was in a 4 year photography program in a magnet high school. I had my own darkroom and it was pretty much heaven. I rebelled against digital for a long time but just recently embraced it;)
