Silver and GoldOctober 24, 2010

When I was a kid, my twin sister and I decided to join a Girl Scout troop. I was mostly into it for the cool uniforms and the impression of free cookies when springtime rolled around. Unfortunately, I was wrong on both counts. My uniform wasn’t very cute and the cookies were never free.

But there was one thing about the experience that left a lasting impression on me. The opening song to every meeting:

Make new friends
but keep the old
one is silver
and the other gold

Interestingly enough I can easily relate to this simple but wonderful song on a very personal level in my adult life. I have cultivated some of the most valuable friendships ever up to this point in life. Most of these began in college and have not stopped flourishing. These are my golden girls. But over the past few months, I have been touched deeply by the blogging community to a level I never expected when first beginning this adventure. This is my silver circle.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of spending a dreamlike weekend with the golden girls of my life, but in prepping for it, each member of the online healthy living community was with me in spirit. The food, the fun, the fare was all conjured up from the countless ideas I get from wonderful bloggers like:

Laury (whose lasagna was a huge hit with my guests)
Heather (I whipped up a variation of her pumpkin spice muffins)
Sophia (whose roasted cauliflower I made afterward)
Laura (whose bread recipes inspired me to make an old favorite from scratch)
Angela (whose recent controversial post on serving heavier foods to guests had me on my toes)

I am truly touched by the wonderful people in my life – both those I’ve met in person and those who are still virtual. Here’s to an amazing weekend spent with both silver and gold.

Setting the scene with delicate delicious chocolates.

I love using real butter

Dill bread from scratch.

My favorite family party dip in the world. Onion soup mix and sour cream!

Warning: these are not healthy Popsicles

Well...unless hard alcohol has amazing healthy properties I'm unaware of.

Tasty pear and apple sauce with a little help from my Twitter friends.

Cookie fail? Inspired by Heather, I served them anyway.

Pumpkin spice muffins with frosting a la healthy blogosphere

Healthy small snackable items.

QUESTION:
How do you honor and spend time with both new and old friends?

Girl!! YOU are wonderful!! I don’t even remember how I stumbled upon you, but that is the beauty of blogging, and the wonders of friendship. I hope you like me more than cauliflowers though, tee hee, as I can list about a thousand ways why I like YOU! :-)

It’s crazy and I never saw it happening but my blogging friends have definitely become some of my silver friends. Something even crazier? I can see a couple of them becoming some of my GOLD friends.

All you food looks great! I spend time with my friends by making sure I hang out with them when I get the opportunity to and then we’ll just.. do whatever! :)

Friends are amazing and blogger friends are unbelievable. A year ago I never would have thought you could be friends with someone you had never met in person.

Everything looks beautiful, especially that bread!

There’s a sort of relationship that I share with my blogger friends which is on a different level of intimacy and understanding than the friends I meet in person. I value both so much, and both have helped me get through the tough times in my life.

I’m not certain if my Silver friends will ever catch up to the Golds. My oldest and dearest friends know so much about me that the newer friends will probably never fully grasp,,cause they weren’t there back in the day…

What a lovely time you’ve had and those foods…. incredible. I love spending time with good friends and eating / cooking together. It’s exactly what we did last weekend with my girlfriends :)
