Concrete Jungle GymNovember 22, 2010

After living in the south for so long, I have had a lot of fun adjusting to the cold weather here in the north. Some of you may be cringing as you read this, but I’ve really enjoyed bundling up and heading out to play in the snow and sleet, as well as the fall leaves crunching under my feet. There are countless benefits to living in a place that has four very distinct seasons.

Unfortunately, one of the largest setbacks to living in the cold is that my natural hibernation instincts have officially kicked in. This means that the idea of going for a run, driving to the gym, or heading to the yoga studio is as enticing as reading a high school math textbook just for the fun of it. When these instincts come on so strong, it’s virtually impossible to get to the gym, I decide to take my surroundings and make my own obstacle course.

Can we? Can we please? Can we pretty please?

Just for a second?

And he's off! Off leash, that is. Loving life.

He likes to chase me down.

It's so fun disguising exercise as play, even if for just a few minutes. I'll take all I can get in cold weather.

Trying to protect the shoes from Clint. He tries to chew my feet after he chases me down.

Who knew a boring parking lot could be so fun?

My favorite part of it all is the reward I get from Clint for our playtime.

Snuggles from a happy, healthy dog.

The end.

I love this post. I feel the same way about Dex. Chris and I took him out into the grassy-sidewalky quad in between our apartment buildings and played with the tennis ball off the leash. We lasted only a few minutes, because Dex wanted to sniff the ground instead. ;)

Ugh, I hate the cold weather period. It’s so hard to get motivated to do much of anything other than snuggle under blankets.

Well, I’m currently having fun with Exercise TV! There are so many options that I’m not getting bored at all. I really LOVE to go for a run in the cold, I’m strange like that. Sometimes I miss the gym, but it just isn’t happening with a little one.

I have been having this problem recently too. I come home now and just want to snuggle and keep warm. So now I have decided that on my gym days I must pack my gym clothes, change at work, and then go straight to the gym… otherwise it just won’t happen. The worst part is I am supposed to be doing my first half-marathon in March… so I will have to train during these cold months ahead of us : (

Gloves and wool socks. As long as my hands and feet are warm, I’m ok.

Your dog is so cute! I’ve been loving DVD workouts for that reason:)

I hear you about the cold weather. And there is something about being dark all day long that makes me want to stay under the blankets all the time. Good thing we don’t have too much of this kind of weather in LA…

Woohoo kombucha! Thanks, Jos. And sorry for taking over your post’s comments section. I just got so excited I couldn’t help it :)

Workout dvds. They’re my saving grace because without them I would be lazier than a snail. Not that snails are lazy or anything but they’re slow and don’t seem to accomplish very much. That would normally be me in the winter if it weren’t for my dvds. Since I can do them from the comfort and warmth of my own home I happily exercise no matter what the weather!

I’m having this strange urge to grab my dog and go play in a parking lot somewhere..

I actually love working out in the cold. All of my training for the Avon Walk (40 miles) was done in January, February, and March…the coldest times in Boston. I guess it feels like I’m doing something tons of other people aren’t doing!

whoa! That sound tough! I doubt I’d even bother leaving the house in that mess. Workout DVDs?
