Thanksgiving TravelsNovember 23, 2010

Since it’s Thanksgiving week, I have a feeling many people are packing up and heading out to various locations across the country. The last thing on most of our minds is getting in some healthy fare, so we will most likely fall into the trap of spending tons of cash on subpar airport and gas station snacks before arriving at our destinations. One of my healthiest solutions to this annoyance is to hit up the bulk aisle of Whole Foods or any healthy food store a month or so before the holiday season hits to create some great travel snacks before taking off. No long, stressed out lines, no over salted fried food, no overspending, all which equals happier stomachs and wallets.

Take some dried cherries

Chocolate chips or carob chips

Roasted mixed nuts

Pour it all into a big bowl

Yum!

Doesn't that look good?

Mix it up in a bowl with a big spoon

Scoop a nice little spoonful into each individual serving bag

And there you have it: a properly portioned serving of trail mix with healthy protein and fruit with a touch of sweet so you don't feel deprived. The best thing is, it's cheapest this way because the ingredients came from the bulk section and none of it was pre-packaged.

QUESTION: Do you ever pack food when you travel? If so, what are your favorites?

I do pack foods – I try to keep at least 2 Kashi bars in my purse at all times actually. I don’t do well when I get hungry ;-)

Mm those mixed nuts look great! I usually bring granola bars and fruit :)

I prefer trail mix made like this as well! If you look at the ingredients on some trail mix packages, it’s like “why did they add random chemicals to this?” Plus it costs a million dollars. This is much better!

I always like to take a trail mix with me when I travel. It’s best to make your own because then you actually know what’s in it (given that you make sure your dried fruit doesn’t have added sugar, oil, or preservatives)

Yum! The hubs and I are starting to gather snacks for our long car trip north. I got us books on tape too! Can’t wait :) Enjoy your holiday, pretty lady!

I love trail mix… and chocolate is a MUST in mines, lol. Happy Thanksgiving!

That does look good! Way better than most prepackaged trail mixes.

I always pack snacks for my trips. Things I bring are usually healthy bars, fruit, precut veggies, sandwich, etc.

I’m the same way! Me minus food during travel is a bad, bad mix:)

Aw, thanks HH! Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

I always pack food. I usually have sandwiches, trail mix and fruit. Especially for the flights over the atlantic, I think that half of my hand luggage contains food! I cannot survive 11 hours on air on 3 gram packs of pretzels and the crappy food they give us!

Yumm! That looks like one excellent trail mix to me. I actually just saw a make your own trail mix station at a fancy Whole Foods the other day, which was pretty cool. I always forget about making this type of on the go snack.

I drive Ben crazy because I always pack food.

That really does look delish! You never know what you will find when you visit other people so I tend to bring Trail Mix of some sort, but I’ve never made it myself like you and that makes a lot of sense!

I never used to pack snacks or food while travelling but since I learned my lesson how crumpy and bad tempered I become when hungry, I now always have something in my bag :)

I love homemade trail mix :-) and I LOVE packing snacks with me….saves so much money

I never do, because for me, part of the fun of traveling is eating out. My parents aren’t as interested, so they sometimes pack trail mix and soymilk. :-)

I usually take a few snacks when I’m traveling. I love eating out but it can get old after a few meals!

Yes Anne, me too! I get very grumpy when hungry. Not a pretty picture at all.
