Earth DayApril 22, 2011
One of my fondest memories of Earth Day was when I was in the 6th grade. My sister and I went to this progressive middle school named The Chiron School for a few years. It was one of those super-earthy places where you called the teacher by her first name, and we as kids had way more say in governing the school than we ever should have. I think I even opted out of math for a few years there.
Anyway, my point is, Earth Day was a huge deal at The Chiron School. We were allowed to create plays, make elaborate costumes, and rehearse beforehand for about a week. In our group play, I willfully decided to appoint myself the Evil Polystyrene Fairy, complete with takeout-container wings and a wand that had a shredded KFC mashed potato bowl dangling from the end of it. Life was good.
Fast forward a few years later to Earth Day 2011, and you’ll find me costume-less on the outside, but donning the same childlike enthusiasm on the inside. When I reflect on the day this year, I find myself focusing on the positive impact that individuals, communities, and corporations are making on the world every day in order to help make it healthy and whole again. So here’s my photo journal expressing my gratitude for the earth and its bounty throughout the year.
