Opting OutMay 30, 2011

Ever since I can remember, I’ve harbored a special love for magazines, catalogs, and books. Anything with a happy, shiny cover depicting happy, shiny people on its pages made me at ease with the world. Coming home from a rough day only to find a catalog in the mailbox always made my evening. Perhaps that’s a rather sad antidote to the absence of a television in my home, but it worked for me nonetheless.

Even though I’ve always recycled these mailings, I think it’s getting to be a bit much. The volume of shiny pages has at least tripled in the past few years, and I’m pretty much over it. Luckily, I found a lovely little green solution…

Quick flip

Brownie points for the FSC thing, but it's just not enough

The solution! Many catalogs will have similar statements on their back covers now. Look for it!

I clicked on this link and was taken to a page to fill out my name and address along with the option to stop all mailings. It didn't take long at all - try it

YOUR HEALTHIEST LIFE: Cutting down on paper usage is one of the easiest and best ways to help lessen your carbon footprint. Besides opting out of catalog mailings, I also make it a point to recycle my desk printer paper and pay all of my bills online.

QUESTION: Do you have any little tips and tricks on how to use less paper at home or at your office?

    Hi Joslyn,
A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon this blog http://zerowastehome.blogspot.com/ which is all about reducing garbage in your home. I’m obsessed with it right now and it’s made me changed a lot of things in the way I consume.
Since you are talking about paper waste I thought you might be interested too :)
I hardly ever read magazines anymore. I realised a while back that they often result in me wanting more things and not feeling good about the way I look…
    Take care,

    Ale

Hi Joslyn, I don’t think this is anything new but I hardly ever get paper mail from my utilities. Instead I have them send me statements through email.

    Another tool is: https://www.catalogchoice.org/

Also there is opting out of CC offers through optout. https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t
Some people might be hesitant about filling the form out since it requires a SSN but it works. I’ve been opting out for a few years now and I don’t get the CC offers through the mail anymore.

I like catalogs though. having them in the mail makes me happy also.

I don’t really use paper at home.  So I guess my only tip is to not use it lol….I think recycling is super important and once you are educated with it, recycling becomes easy! :-)

I love this resource!  Thank you so much for sharing it Chris – I had no idea this site existed!

That is a good point.  Once you get the hang of it, it’s just as convenient as disposing “garbage”
