Adventures in JuicingAugust 3, 2011

A few days ago my husband and I watched a great movie titled: Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. With that name, I hesitated to sit down and actually view the film, because I’m usually not one to go for titles that are so sensationalist in nature. I am so glad I did though…

I’ve always been a healthy eater, but it is so wonderful to get full-on wake up calls once in a while. The movie was a documentary about a few men who were very ill and overweight, and how they took control of their health through juicing loads of fruits and vegetables every day. This film definitely gave me the nudge I needed to put raw fruits and vegetables back to a high priority place in my diet. Although the movie is mostly about people who need an extreme change in their lives, it totally motivated me to want to juice right away. Since my husband is always 2 steps ahead of me, he prompted us to buy the juicer before we had even watched the movie. Smart move indeed.

Since most of my waking hours over the past 2 months have been spent whipping up Shea butters, mixing body oils, and blending scrubs, juicing a few meals a day totally makes sense. Given, one cannot subsist off of liquid alone for long, but this new routine has freed up my schedule while keeping me more energized and healthier than ever. Serious score, y’all. Here are a few pics chronicling the journey thus far…

Cucumber juice? Yup.

I like to layer the different colors so its like I'm drinking a rainbow. Somehow, this makes pond scum taste a little more palatable.

The aftermath. AKA plant carnage. Perfect for composting.

A ginger carrot apple kale cocktail. On the rocks.

Interestingly enough, ingesting so many plant nutrients makes you crave even more. After juicing all day, I decided on sauteed kale as a dinner side dish instead of potato chips. I like where this is headed.

Your Healthiest Life: I think we all need to change our eating routines once in a while in order to shake things up and keep our cells renewed and happy. If you never have had fresh juice before, I suspect your body is in for a treat! Seeing that most of us are getting way too much flour and sugar in our daily diets, all of those fresh enzymes and nutrients will be an oasis for your body. Go for it.

QUESTION: Have you ever tried juicing?

I love juicing and own a juicer. I’ve been eating lots of crap for the past couple of months–thanks for the inspiration. I loved the documentary, too. It was wonderful! I especially liked the fact that the guys involved, especially the guy from the Midwest, were very average guys. Having grown up in the organic food scene, which could become precious and annoying (hippie parents), it was refreshing to see an average guy take charge of his health in a very down to earth way (and for very practical reasons–his life). I’m going to watch it again:).

My husband and I watched this documentary just a few weeks ago…It was crazy how much weight these guys lost! I loved the idea but I’m having a hard time finding a good source for juicing. I’m not quite sure how to start or recipes for the juice…help?

I love juicing! My favorite combos are apples, beets, carrots or spinach, apples, carrots. Have you tried adding fresh grated ginger? Yummy.

So yummy, but so expensive!!! Our grocery budget doesn’t allow for juicing every day, but you are right, the benefits are amazing!

  • missfitbliss

It can get expensive, but I’ve been buying mostly fruits and veggies that are abundant and in season right now and it helps tremendously.  And there are certain ones like cucumbers and carrots that yield a lot of juice for just one piece!

  • missfitbliss

Yes!  I love the ginger addition, it’s soooo good!  I’m finding golden beets to be a bit more palatable than red, although the red does make it gorgeous!

  • missfitbliss

I couldn’t agree with you more!  And those were perfect descriptors; “precious and annoying”:)

  • missfitbliss

You can find lots of helpful sites with juice recipes if you do a google search.  But it’s actually quite fun to just give it a go yourself and throw stuff in until you get the hang of it or find what tastes suit you.  Believe me, you’ll learn very quickly what tastes good and what doesn’t!  I’ll post more juice recipes on the site soon too:))

Yes ma’am! My name is Chelsea and I am a juice-aholic! What is so amazing is that I am working on a blog right now about how juicing has been rocking my world lately. I am absolutely in love with green lemonade: celery, kale, red and green apples one lemon, and ginger! Try it! You will not be sorry. Also, I saw a preview about the documentary you cited and I got emotional just watching. Thanks Joslyn for sharing!

Oooh!  I am totally gonna try that recipe tomorrow morning Chelsea!  I’m not surprised at all that we both have been juicing at the same time – we’re always on the same wavelength:))

aahhh – Jason and I have been on a juice fast for a month (with a few breaks in between for events, etc). after we had been juicing all of our meals for a week, we watched that awesome movie – it reinforced all we were doing! we are feeling amazing! :)

  • missfitbliss

That is so cool!  What an awesome coincidence:)  And congrats on such willpower – I don’t know that I have it in me to do a fast.  I’ve tried and I wimp out by dinnertime!

I saw that on Netflix the other day and was wondering if it was any good. Having just watched Forks Over Knives, I’ll give myself a couple of days breath first though!
